Katie McGrath -- Nursing Student & NYC Marathoner

By: Susannah Geary
Runners, athletes and passionate competitors from all over the world have been running in the New York City Marathon for the past 48 years. Salem State University's own Katie McGrath will be joining them November 4th in New York City.
The Marathon travels through all five boroughs of New York City, beginning in Staten Island, and then traversing onto Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx, ending on the island of Manhattan, totaling 26. 2 miles. Katie is no stranger to New York but it is her first time running the New York City Marathon. Actually, her first ever running a marathon will be this one.
Katie started running a few years ago and as her running improved her interest in running in 5ks, 10ks, and half marathons increased. “I like to challenge myself and see what I am capable of. I became a better runner as I ran more and increased my mileage. Running makes me feel good mentally and physically.” She ran her first half marathon in November 2017.
Katie is also a dedicated student, and is in her junior year of nursing school. “Running is a great stress reliever. I am constantly studying and doing school work. So to put on my sneakers and go out for a run is an awesome feeling.”
She has been working hard in school and getting some online inspiration when training time has been decreased with classes beginning. “Training is hard, it takes a lot mentally. I followed a training plan but honestly it’s been slacking with how busy I have been with classes. Junior year is said to be the toughest semester of nursing school. So I am pretty crazy for doing this now. But I know I have the mental strength and I am confident I can finish. The last 6 miles is a huge mental game. I’ve read some blogs for guidance.”
Katie may be busy with school but she’s running with a charity called “Team for Kids”. This charity helps youth programs provide active and healthy activities.
She won’t be in New York alone, her parents, three sisters and two brother-in-laws will be coming to cheer her on in the sidelines. They’ll be staying in Chelsea and if they have time between the race and getting back to Massachusetts they want to see the Freedom Tower and the High Line, but Katie wants to make sure she isn’t on her feet too much. “I would just like to have a go to a good restaurant and take in Marathon weekend.”
We are sure that Katie will be amazing and have an experience she will never forget. Stay tuned for a follow up from Red Skies when Katie returns with her first ever New York City Marathon experience.
